Cadet Week 2020

Useful info about Cadet Week:

  • Cadet Week runs from Sunday 1st Aug (registration: 1pm) to Friday 6th August.
  • The cost for the week is £TBC a cadet.
  • Children under the age of 12 must have a responsible adult on site at all times.
  • You can only book a place for your own cadet(s).
  • Registration is open until TBD
  • Cadet Week is a catered event with a picnic lunch Monday to Friday and an evening meal Monday to Thursday included in the cost. We also cater for registered adult helpers (except for the Gala Dinner on Wednesday which is £10 extra per guest).
  • Please note to take part in River-based training or Racing a Cadet must have their own boat or have booked one of the Club Fevas /420s. The club Toppers have been reserved for new members.
  • To make Cadet Week a success we rely on parent volunteers to help out. Experience tells us that keeping parents and their children apart works best - don't be offended if you don't get your chosen duty.
  • We have early tides this year with corresponding early starts.
  •  We have no control of the weather, even in July, so cadets will need appropriate clothing for all conditions.  If you are unsure what you will need, please ask. Cadets that turn up with inadequate clothing may not be allowed to sail.
  • Cadets have the option to go to Madison Heights on TBD evening from 6pm - 8pm for Monkey Puzzle Madness and Roller Skating at an extra £5 per cadet. Note we will not be supplying coaches this year so parents will need to arrange transport to and from Madison Heights.
  • Very important: Cadets like Cake so please bring some!

Cadet week is split into training and racing groups so please indicate which group you want to join on the registration form (the Cadet Management Committee reserves the right to determine which group a cadet goes in; cadets who are not capable of keeping up with the rest of the racing fleet and hold up racing will be moved into training groups). Have a look at the Cadet Section of the BSC Club Website for further information on training, adult volunteer duties, types of boat classes etc.

We will be running the following training groups, subject to numbers and instructor availability:

Lake training

  • Sprites: Complete beginners, no experience required. Club training boats will be provided.
  • Jolly Sailors: Cadets with some experience who have completed a year’s sailing. Although cadets do not need their own boat, it is preferable.

  • Lilt: Cadets who have completed their RYA Level 1 and are building to join one of the river training groups. Own boats are recommended.

River training: Cadets in these groups will work towards their RYA Levels 2 and 3 and must have their own boats:

  • Oppie Tango

  • Topper/Tera Tango

River coached racing: Cadets in these groups will be taking part in racing, but will have a coach assigned to them covering theory and providing advice on the water. Cadets must have their own boat.

  • Optimist MG
  • Topper/Tera MG
RYA Level 4 and Seamanship Course: This course will take place in the club Quest dinghies with instructors. Cadets wanting to take part in this course must be at least 12 and have completed RYA Level 3. Priority will be given to older cadets in the event this course is oversubscribed.

Please pay by bank transfer to the club bank account quoting your billing group reference (on your invoice) AND the word Cadet (eg H092cadet, A002cadet etc).

Club Bank account details: Sort code 40-31-35 A/c no: 30132926
