Welcome to the 3rd BSC Cadet training weekend of 2025
This event supports all Cadet sailing abilities; from complete beginners in Optimists on the lake through to experienced Cadets in Optimists, Topper/Teras, Fevas, 420s and Lasers sailing on the river. Additionally, subject to demand and availability we will be offering Cadets the opportunity to crew in Mirrors, Sprites and other sailing boats.
Important points:
- Weather Appropriate Clothing! It can be bitterly cold on the water any time of year so appropriate clothing is essential (see here). Cadets with inadequate clothing will not be allowed to sail
- Food! This is a non-catered event, please bring your own packed lunch (and lots of cake to share!)
- Attending this weekend improves your chances of joining Cadet Week (see Cadet week registration
- Children under 12 and those attending their first training event at Blackwater SC must have an allocated responsible adult on site at all times.
Training Groups:
Subject to Cadet demand and availability of instructors and volunteers (please do offer your services), we hope to run the following groups:
- Sprites:- Complete beginners, no experience required, minimum age 7. Cadets will learn to sail in a safe controlled manner to obtain their BSC Lake Badge. No boat needed as group uses club training Optimists.
- Jolly Sailors:- Cadets with some experience who have completed a year’s sailing on the lake. Cadets will build on their previous experience and achieve RYA Level 1 certificate. Cadets do not need their own boat for this group however progress will be quicker if they have one.
- Lilt:- Cadets who have achieved RYA Level 1 and developing in confidence. Cadets will build experience, start completing skills required for RYA Level 2 and build confidence ready to join a river training group. Cadets don't require their own boat to join this group but it's strongly recommended in order to enable them to progress to river groups. Note: club Optimists don't go on the river.
- Oppie Over the Wall:- Cadet Optimist river sailors who were previously in Lilt or have equivalent experience. The group aims to achieve RYA Level 2. As training takes place on the river, Cadets must have their own boat to join.
- Oppie Tango:- The group aims achieve their RYA Level 3 badge. Sailors wanting to join this group should have as a minimum their RYA Level 2 and completed one season sailing Optimists on the river. you must have your own boat to be part of this group.
- Oppie MG:- This group focuses on developing racing skills and inclusion in this group is by invitation. Cadets must have their own boat to take part in this group
- Topper/Tera in the Hole:- Suitable for Cadets who have achieved RYA Level 1. Cadets will be working towards their Level 2 Badge. Ideally Cadets will have their own boat, but a limited number of club boats are available for hire - please request on registration.
- Topper/Tera Tango:- Suitable for Cadets who have achieved RYA Level 2. Cadets will be working towards their Level 3 Badge. Cadets must have their own boat to take part in this group.
- Topper/Tera MG:- focuses on developing racing skills and inclusion in this group is by invitation. Cadets must have their own boat to take part in this group.
- Feva MG:- focuses on developing racing skills and inclusion in this group is by invitation. Ideally Cadets will have their own boat, but a limited number of club boats are available for hire - please request on registration.
- Laser MG:-< focuses on developing racing skills and inclusion in this group is by invitation. Ideally Cadets will have their own boat, but one club Laser is be available for hire - please request on registration.
- 420 MG:- focuses on developing racing skills and inclusion in this group is by invitation. Ideally Cadets will have their own boat, but one club boat may be available for hire - please request on registration.
- Crewing group:- aimed at giving Cadets the opportunity to crew in Mirrors, Sprites and other sailing boats. This group is by invite based on availability.

Volunteering:
Volunteers are essential for successful training weekends! There are a range of duties to choose from, not all require sailing experience. Please let us know how you can help out via the registration form.

Payment:
The cost of this weekend's training is £20, or £15 for one day.
Please pay by bank transfer to the club bank account quoting your billing group reference (on your invoice) AND the word Cadet (eg. H092Cadet, A002Cadet etc).

Your place will be confirmed once payment is received. If you have not paid your 2025 club membership fees you will not be able to register.
Please note that if we cannot accommodate your Cadet in an appropriate group or run the event, your registration will be cancelled, and you will receive a full refund.
