BLACKWATER SAILING CLUB
Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy and Procedures

Policy Statement
The Blackwater Sailing Club is committed to safeguarding, from physical, sexual or emotional harm, neglect or bullying, children taking part in its activities. We recognise that the safety, welfare and needs of the child are paramount and that all children, irrespective of age, disability, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual or gender identity or social status, have a right to protection from discrimination and abuse.
For the purposes of this policy anyone under the age of 18 should be considered as a child.
All members of the Club should be aware of the policy.

Staff and Volunteers
All new applicants for dinghy instructor, senior instructor and coach are now required to pass the RYA online Safe + Fun course. All Club staff and volunteers whose role brings them into regular contact with young people should have access to the RYA’s full Safeguarding and Child Protection Guidelines which can be found at: www.rya.org.uk/go/safeguarding

Good Practice
All members of the Club should follow the good practice guidelines and agree to abide by the Club Code of Conduct and the RYA Racing Charter contained in the Racing Rules of Sailing. All staff and volunteers working with young people should be aware of the guidance on recognising abuse – see RYA Appendix A in the RYA’s full Safeguarding and Child Protection Guidelines.

Where possible, when adults are using the showers and changing rooms at times when children are changing it is better if one adult is not alone and it is advised that another adult accompanies them.

Photographic Permission
Adults registering their cadet, or children who are their responsibility for club events will be asked to give consent to the taking of photos and videos during the events. They will be asked to confirm that they have explained this consent to their child. Any photos and videos taken may be displayed by the Club or published in BSC publications and the BSC website or shared with cadet families.
When taking and publishing images of children, the club will follow the guidance in the RYA’s full Safeguarding and Child Protection Guidelines www.rya.org.uk/go/safeguarding
Any concerns about inappropriate or intrusive photography or the inappropriate use of images should be reported to the Club Child Protection Officer.

Concerns
Anyone who is concerned about a young member’s or participant’s welfare within the Club, should inform the Child Protection Officer, or their assistant, immediately, in strict confidence. The Child Protection Officer, or their assistant, will follow the procedures contained in the RYA’s Safeguarding and Child Protection Guidelines (see RYA Flowcharts 1 & 2) and decide on the appropriate action to be taken.
